IEM Cologne Major 2026 Stage 1 Recap: Big Upsets and Surprises

The IEM Cologne Major 2026 Stage 1 concluded with shocking upsets as BIG stormed through undefeated, MIBR staged a miracle comeback, and Chinese teams TYLOO and Lynn Vision were eliminated. Here's everything you need to know.

The first stage of the IEM Cologne Major 2026 wrapped up on June 5 in Cologne, Germany, delivering everything Counter-Strike fans love — upsets, drama, and unforgettable moments. After five rounds of intense Swiss-format competition, eight teams advanced to Stage 2 while eight others saw their Major dreams come to an end.

Stage 1 Results: Who Advanced

  • BIG (3-0) — The German squad was the only team to finish Stage 1 undefeated, dominating in front of their home crowd
  • Team Liquid (3-1) — NA’s hope looked sharp, with NAF posting a tournament-best 1.35 rating
  • Heroic (3-1) — The Danish team showed their trademark disciplined CS
  • MIBR (3-1) — FalleN’s squad pulled off an incredible elimination match comeback
  • NRG (3-2) — North America’s second representative fought through the lower bracket
  • GamerLegion (3-2) — The IEM Atlanta runners-up proved their run was no fluke
  • BetBoom (3-2) — Came back from the brink of elimination to secure their spot
  • M80 (3-2) — The NA young guns clinched qualification in the final round

The Biggest Story: MIBR’s Miracle

Trailing 1-2 and facing elimination, MIBR did what Brazilian CS does best — they refused to lose. Back-to-back BO3 wins against BetBoom and NRG sent the crowd into a frenzy. For FalleN, who is reportedly nearing retirement, every match in Cologne could be his last on the Major stage.

Chinese Teams Eliminated

TYLOO finished 1-3, winning their opening match against SINNERS but dropping three straight to Heroic, M80, and NRG. Despite strong individual performances from Jee and JamYoung, team coordination gaps proved costly.

Lynn Vision went 0-3, unable to find their footing against world-class opposition. The Chinese CS scene still has work to do to compete at the highest level.

What’s Next: Stage 2

Stage 2 runs June 6-9, with 16 teams in another Swiss bracket. The eight Stage 1 qualifiers will be joined by the tournament’s top seeds:

  • Team Vitality — The defending champions and heavy favorites
  • NAVI — IEM Atlanta champions, fresh off ending Vitality’s streak
  • Team Spirit — PGL Astana winners with donk in MVP form
  • Team Falcons — The superteam still chasing their first trophy
  • FURIA — Brazil’s second hope alongside MIBR
  • PARIVISION — DreamLeague S29 champions
  • MOUZ — Consistency personified
  • The MongolZ — Asia’s rising powerhouse

Every match in Stage 2 is BO3, raising the stakes significantly. Can Vitality begin their march to a historic third consecutive Major title, or will a new challenger emerge? All eyes are on Cologne.
